I am British with a tunisian partner. I read all the reviews on Houria Palace and I wasn't expecting much. Just wanted somewhere to stay as a base and to eat and drink at meal times. I paid all inclusive for two adults through Catchit at a good price. Many people warned me not to stay at this hotel but for the price I wanted to try it myself as I come out to Tunisia every 2 months and it would have been the perfect place to stay regularly due to the location.
Unfortunately from the moment I arrived I regretted my choice. I wasn't even at the hotel when my partner called to say they had refused to give him an all inclusive wrist band, purely on the basis of him being of tunisian nationality. I told him it was paid for and I would sort it when I got there. I met him at reception to check-in and was told to come back in two hours as the rooms were not ready.
I asked about my partner's wrist band and was told the same again by an exceptionally rude receptionist. I asked for the manager and was told he was in a meeting and to come back. I came back 3 times. On the 4th time the manager came out and told me that because my partner was Arabic he had to pay an extra €10.50 a day for all inclusive. This may not seem much but keep in mind a tunisians salary and the fact thats its an extra 50% of the price paid for one night per night for context.
I explained I had already paid all 2 rooms 2 adults all inclusive and showed my recipt. He said Catchit were at fault and it happened regularly. I asked him to show me where on the hotel website it stated about the extra charge but he could not tell me. He pointed to a notice on the desk in Arabic and told me it was explained there. He refused the band.
I said I wanted it in writing to claim back and take to Catchit and he refused telling me to come back the next day at 9 am. As I had made the booking I was trying to rectify the issue but they would refuse to speak to me and address my partner in Arabic only despite being perfectly fluent in English.
The next day I came back at 9 am for the meeting the manager had asked me to attend. The same unhelpful receptionist said he didn't start until 10 am and to come back again. I came back at 10 am and was told to come back 11:30 as he was not there. This continued throughout the day.
Eventually I did get a band for the last 2 days for an additional cost of €10 as a "goodwill gesture", however all the time wasted in reception and the extra charges and not being able to just have a nice glass of wine at dinner with my partner and having to eat out completely tainted the trip from the start. We were also chased into the restaurant on day one just to be told that on our last day we would not be entitled to any food or drinks. Something I have never experienced before in any hotel. Pretty poor given the fact my pick up was not until 4 pm!
There is no bottled water in this hotel and on a couple of occasions they didn't even have any water at all in the bar or in the restaurant. The food is good and fresh every day.
The hotel is very dated and in my room the shower did not work. I was not going to waste even more time at reception so I just got on with it and used the one in my partners room. The heating and air con was good and the rooms were fine. Safes did not work.
Pool areas were extremely old and dated. Poor choice in the one bar. Other paid bar is often unnatended.
Lots of algerians at meal times who will push you out the way for food, absolutely over load their plates with food leaving nothing behind and then not even touch it. Some mornings there was no omelette etc, there is no toast, no coffee machines. None of these things really bother me, I've experienced worse.
There is no entertainment or animation, possibly due to it being the winter.
One day I went to breakfast alone sat down at an empty table and was told to move because it was saved for another guest. I stayed until the end of service at another table and nobody ever came. I found this very odd as it was really like staff just went out of there way to be difficult at every given opportunity. This is the first time I've taken money to tip all the staff and not given any because of how we were treated.
There are ant problems in a lot of the rooms also, ours was OK but a lot of people were complaining about it. Once we paid out the extra and my partner had the band he had already paid for prior to arriving, the hotel facilities became bare minimum acceptable. But there is absolutely no way on earth I would ever stay here again. I will also be seeking compensation.
This is my first bad hotel stay in Tunisia, and actually any Arab country and I'm very disappointed. Out of the 3 nights with my partner most of my time was spent waiting at a reception desk and arguing with people which again I have never experienced again. Shocking hotel and shocking service will definitely listen to reviews next time.
My partner says they told him the extra cost is because Arabic people drink more. This is funny to me because he definitely had nowhere near as much as the British guests for a start and also all inclusive is supposedly just that.
